1 package. dry yeast
1/4 C. warm water
2 C. Buttermilk
5 C. All- purpose flour
3/4 C. sugar
1 T. Baking powder
1 t. Salt
1 t. Baking soda
1 C. Shortening ( I use solid Crisco)

Directions:
Combine yeast and warm water. Let stand 5 minutes until bubbly. Add buttermilk to yeast mixture, set aside

Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl; cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add buttermilk mixture, mixing with a fork until dry ingredients are moistened. Turn dough out on floured surface and knead lightly about 3 - 4 times.

Roll to 1/2 inch thickness; cut into rounds with 2 inch cutter. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 - 12 minutes.
