Wash 1 bushel of medium sized cucumbers and soak in clear water overnight and drain. Have at hand a supply of grape leaves, cherry leaves, a small grated horse radish root, 1 large onion (sliced) and dill. Put 2 layers of cucumbers in bottom of a large stone jar, cover with grape leaves, cherry leaves, dill, onion and horse radish. Repeat until jar is almost full.

Then pour over, a brine made of 6 quarts of water and 2 quarts of vinegar. Cover with plate and weigh it down. Keep in a cool place. These pickles are fine and will keep hard until used.
