1 1/2 cups brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup shortening, softened
1 egg
1/3 cup sour milk
2 1/2 cups flour
3/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. ginger
3/4 cup raisins
3/4 cup walnuts, chopped (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together 1 cup brown sugar and shortening until fluffy. Beat in egg. Blend in the remaining brown sugar and the milk. Measure together flour, soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. Gradually add to creamed mixture. Mix well. Add raisins and walnuts. Drop by teaspoonful on cookie sheet. Bake at 375º for about 12-15 minutes or until lightly browned.

If sour milk is not available, use 1 tsp. lemon juice or cider vinegar and 1/3 cup milk.
