Ingredients: 1 1/3 cups sifted flour 1 1/3 tsp baking powder 1/2 cup shortening 1/2 cup sugar 4 egg yolks 5 T. milk 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp vanilla Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Cream shortening; add sugar and beat until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating briskly after each addition. Add flour and milk alternately. Stir in vanilla. Spread into 2-8" layer cake pans which have been greased. Spread mixture so that it is higher on the sides than in the center. Spread with meringue (Recipe below)

Directions:Meringue: 4 egg whites 1/2 tsp cream of tartar 1 cup sugar 1/2 tsp vanilla Beat egg whites until stiff. Add cream of tartar and beat well. Beat in sugar and vanilla, adding sugar gradually. Mixture should stand on peaks. Spread evenly on top of first mixture. Bake at 250º for 25 minutes, then increase oven temperature to 350º and bake 20 minutes longer. Cool and put fresh strawberries or frozen strawberries between layers and over the top. Serve with cream, whipped or plain or ice cream, as desired. |
