"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
2 cups sugar
1 cup water
3/4 cup karo (white) syrup
oil flavoring (such as cinnamon or lemon peppermint)
food coloring

Directions:
Directions:
Bring sugar and water to a hard boil to 300 degrees with candy thermometer. When you reach 300 degrees, remove from heat and add 1/2 teaspoon of oil flavoring and food coloring to desired shade. Mix well and pour onto a greased cookie sheet (use pam spray). When gooey, cut quickly with greased scissors into small pieces. BE CAREFUL...it is extremely hot and if you get the liquid on you, run for the sink of cold water!! I learned that the hard way! When cool, toss the pieces with powdered sugar.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
It's fun to have 2-3 people to do this because it cools so quickly. These are cute in little Christmas jars for teacher gifts or little gifts for people!

Suggestions:
cinnamon oil - red food coloring
wintergreen oil - green or blue coloring
peppermint oil - no food coloring
licorice - black
