1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup powered sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp almond extract
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
red food coloring

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 375 degrees prep cookie sheets
Mix thoroughly: 1/2 cup butter, softened, 1/2 cup shortening, 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 egg, 1 1/2 tsp almond extract & 1 tsp vanilla. Blend in 2 1/2 cups flour mix with 1 tsp salt ( if self rising flour omit salt)
Divide the dough in half, in two bowls, mix one with red food coloring until the red color is to your liking.
Shape at least 1 tbls of dough from each bowl of dough into a long rope 4 inch in size. Roll back and forth to get shape equal on a lightly flowered board. Roll the two ropes side by side, press together lightly and twist into shape of a candy cane. Complete cookies one at a time and place on cookie sheet. Curve the tops to make the handle of the cane. Bake at least 9 minutes or until light brown. Mix 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy and 1/2 cup sugar and Sprinkle over cookie IMMEDIATELY after removing from oven.
