1½ lbs. round steak cut in 1 inch cubes
1/4 cup all purpose flour
1 large onion, cut up
2 tbsp. shortening
2 cups water
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. thyme, crushed
2 cups diced new potato

Directions:
Directions:
Toss beef with flour. In saucepan, cook beef and onion in shortening until beef is browned and onion is tender. Add water, 1 teaspoon salt, thyme and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Cover; simmer 1½ hours. Add potatoes. Cover; simmer 20 minutes.
Prepare pastry topper. Turn meat into 1½ quart casserole, season with salt and pepper. Cut slits in the pastry ; place over hot mixture, Turn under edge, flute. Brush with milk. Bake at 450º until golden, about 15 minutes.
Pastry Topper: Combine 3/4 cup all purpose flour and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cut in 1/4 cup shortening until pieces are the size of small peas. Using 2 to 3 tablespoons cold water, sprinkle 1 tablespoon at a time over mixture; gently toss with a fork. Form into a ball. Roll on lightly floured surface to a circle 1/2 to 1 inch larger than casserole dish.
