Cake Mixture:
1 c. pitted dates, cut fine
1 c. boiling water
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 egg
2 tbsp. butter
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. chopped walnuts

Combine dates and water - set aside. Blend sugars, egg, and butter. Stir dry ingredients together. Add to sugar mixture. Stir in cooled dates and nuts. Pour into 11x7 pan.

Brown sugar sauce:
Boil 3 minutes: 1 1/2 c. brown sugar, 1 1/2 c. boiling water and 1 tbsp. butter. Pour over cake mixture.

Bake at 315º for 35-40 minutes.

This is Grandma Kramer's recipe - I always loved this cake except for the last time she made it she cooked it twice because she couldn't remember if she had baked it yet. We all had a good laugh over it. It was tough but it was still edible!
