2 cups sugar
2 cups water
1/3 cups shortening
2 cups raisins
½ teaspoon cloves
½ teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoons soda
4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
½ cup pecans (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Combine sugar, water, shortening, raisins, and spices in a saucepan and boil five minutes. Add soda which has been dissolved in a small amount of water.

Add flour, baking powder, salt and pecans. Pour into a greased, floured tube pan. Bake 1 hour in a slow oven (300-325 degrees).
