1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 3/4 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1 cup raisins
2 cup nuts
1 cup hot applesauce.

To turn this into a fruit cake:
2 cups cut-up dates

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together the shortening, sugar, and egg.

Sift together and stir in the flour, salt, soda, cinnamon, and cloves.

Add the raisins and nuts.

Stir the hot applesauce in last.

(At Christmas, add 2 cups cut-up dates to make a fruit cake.) Bake in a greased 9 x 13” pan 1 hour at 350 degrees.
