Notes: Growing up, this chili sauce was a regular at the breakfast table - especially holidays. Grandma Hansen used to rave about Grandma Betty's chili sauce and tell about when Grandma sent down a bottle just after spending a few days doing repeat batches, Linda brought over a fresh loaf of bread and Grandma Hansen combined the two delightful gifts and finished them both in one sitting.
A few years ago my mom and I set out to make a batch. We decided to double the recipe so we could each take home a fair amount. As we were putting the sugar in, we accidentally quadrupled it! We ran into town and bought more of everything. Because the first batch had all of the spices we ended up mixing all of it in two extra large pots (30 inches deep) in the bath tub to distribute the spices evenly by stirring and pouring them back and forth between the two pots. We were up until late stirring and simmering and stirring and simmering. Needless to say, it did pass the Connie Hansen test! :)
