I don't remember a time in my childhood where we didn't skate. The most important part was that we skated as a family....
I remember 4am mornings to drive to competitions. Sparkly, beaded, showy costumes and tan thick tights. Skate lessons with Barbara and Harry. Being pushed at lessons even to the point of tears. My dance partner, Lucas. New York Seltzers, Cotton Candy and Abba Zabba's at the snack bar. The smell of my wood skate case EVERY time I opened it. White shoe polish my dad would paint my skates with to hide the scuffs. Times where we would skate just to skate and skate to compete. The many wonderful families we met at Empire Skate. Scissor skating. Taking off my pinky fingernail when I accidentally put it under my toe stop doing a "shooting the duck" I think that's what it was called. The lockers. Seeing the whole family at the rink every week. Skating together in big shows. Oklahoma!!!. My dad bruising his ribs the very 1st time he tried to skate, he slipped and landed on the hand bar. Falls and falls. Speed racing. Waltz dancing. The loud music. Wearing make-up, lots and lots of bright colored make-up! Never being to tired to skate especially because I knew I was going to see my family and friends.
