1 1/2 c sifted cake flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
1/8 tsp pepper
1/2 c soft butter
1/2 c light brown sugar, firmly packed
1 c granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/4 c buttermilk

1. Preheat oven to 350º. Grease and flour 2 8x 1 1/2 in layer cake pans or a 13x9x2 in baking pan.
2. Sift flour with baking powder, soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and pepper.
3. In large bowl of electric mixer on high speed, beat butter, sugars, eggs and vanilla until light and fluffy - about 5 minutes -scraping sides of bowl.
4. At low speed, beat in flour mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Beat just until smooth - about 1 minute.
5. Pour batter into prepared pans; bake layers 30-35 min; bake oblong 40-45 min.
6. Cool in pans 10 min.

This is wonderful with a lemon frosting made from powdered sugar and fresh lemon juice. Mix to desired consistency.
