17 ounces honey
3 tablespoons grated chocolate
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
5 cups all purpose flour
1 egg, beaten
1 tablespoon baking soda

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350ŗ F;
2. Butter a rectangular cake pan;
3. Heat the first five ingredients in a saucepan on the stove, but do not let boil;
4. While warm, add the flour, the beaten egg and the baking soda diluted in warm water;
5. Pour the mixture into the buttered pan, without filling too much;
6. Place cake pan in oven for about 45 minutes to an hour, or until a toothpick comes out clean;
7. Unmold, and when cool, cover with a chocolate icing.

This recipe was provided in Portuguese by my cousin Ana Elisa (who, by the way, speaks English very well!). Pao de mel is the Brazilian equivalent to the German Lebkuchen, the American Gingerbread or the French Pain d'Epices.
