1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
3 eggs
3 cups flour
3 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon anise flavoring
1 cup coarsely chopped almonds (optional)

For Christmas:
Use vanilla flavoring, not anise.
Add Cranberries & pistachios

Directions:
Cream butter and sugar thoroughly. Add eggs one at a time and beat well. Add flour, baking soda and salt to creamed mixture. stir in flavoring and nuts. Turn mixture only a lightly floured board and knead until smooth. divide dough in half. Form into two rolls the length of a cooking sheet and 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until rolls are firm to touch.

While still warm, cut rolls crosswise (angle) into slices 3/4 inch thick. Lay these cut side down on a cooky sheet and return to oven and bake 10 minutes longer to toast and dry out. Makes 4 dozen.
