4 cups flour, 1 cup white sugar, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp. salt, 1 cup shortening, 2 eggs beaten, 1 cup buttermilk, 1 1/2 tsp. soda, 2 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, sugar and salt into a mixing bowl. Add shortening and work very fine as in pastry (I use a pastry blender to do this.) Add soda to buttermilk combine beaten eggs and vanilla and stir until foamy. Add to the dry ingredients and mix well. Drop by heaping teaspoon on a greased cookie sheet, sprinkle with sugar, and bake in a moderate oven 350 degrees for about 12 minutes. Makes about 5 dozen cookies.

This is a very old recipe my mother used to make. These cookies are soft, spongy and flavorsome.
