Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 c. flour
1/4 c. packed brown sugar
1/2 c. pecans, or other nuts
1/2 c. butter or margarine

3 c. berries of any kind. (I have always used strawberries.)
1 c. sugar
2 egg whites
2 t. lemon juice.
1 c. whipping cream

Directions:
Directions:
In bowl, combine flour, brown sugar and nuts. Add the butter cut into small pieces. With hands, rub butter into flour mixture until crumbly. Spread mixture in rimmed baking sheet. Bake in 375º oven for about 15 minutes. Stir several times, watching closely that crumbs don't over-brown.

When crumbs are cool, set aside 1/2 cup; spread remaining crumbs in bottom of a 10" pan with removable sides.

In large bowl of electric mixer, beat sugar, egg whites, lemon juice. Beat until firm peaks form when beaters are withdrawn, about 15 minutes. Fold in 2 cups of smashed berries. In other bowl, whip the cream until soft peaks form, then gently but thoroughly fold into berry mixture. Pour into the crumb-lined pan; sprinkle with remaining crumbs. Cover and freeze until firm, at least 12 hours.

Put remaining cup of berries on top when served.

Personal Notes:
This strawberry thing I always used to make for Linda's birthday rather than a cake. I haven't made it for a long time and had forgotten about it. She specifically asked that it be included in our book.
