3/4 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. Molasses
2 1/4 c. flour
2 tsp. soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger

Directions:
Directions:
Mix first four ingredients together thoroughly. Stir in flour, soda, and seasonings. Chill dough overnight, covered. When ready to make, roll into balls the size of large walnuts. Dip tops in Sugar. Place sugar side up 3 inches apart on greased baking sheet. Sprinkle each cookie with 2-3 drops of water to produce a cracked surface. Bake at 375º for 8-10 minutes. Bake just until set but not hard, so cookies will be soft and chewy.
