Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 lb. dried green split peas
1 can sauerkraut ( 14 oz. or 28 oz.)
3 cups water
Salt and pepper
1 onion, chopped
4-5 slices of bacon, chopped

Directions:
Directions:
Rinse sauerkraut well and put into saucepan with 3 cups of water or to cover. Bring to boil, cover, and simmer about 30 minutes or until tender. While sauerkraut is cooking, put peas into another saucepan. Cover with water, bring to to boil, cover and simmer about 30 minutes. Watch carefully. The peas absorb water fairly quickly. You may need to add more water while cooking. When done, peas should be a creamy consistency.

Drain sauerkraut, saving the cooking liquid. Put sauerkraut into a bowl, add cooked peas. If too thick, add some of sauerkraut liquid. Fry bacon and onions together. Drain fat and add to split peas and sauerkraut. Season with salt and pepper.

Personal Notes:
Mom always made this as part of our Christmas Eve meal. From the name of the recipe, you can see it's not everybody's favorite. Pete and Scott like it. CMB
