1/2 c unsalted butter at room temperature
1 c sugar
1 egg at room temperature
1 1/2 c applesauce
1 c pecans, chopped
1 c raisins
1 c dates, chopped
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
1 tsp vanilla
2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups flour

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, vanilla and applesauce.

In a separate bowl, sift the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves and salt. Stir to combine and add to applesauce mixture. Mix only until combined. Fold in nuts, raisins and dates.

Pour into greased and floured tube cake pan. Cook for 1 hour, then remove and decorate with candied cherries and pecan halves. Return to oven for 15-30 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean. Cool on wire rack.

This is Berta Tumlinson's recipe. I have the original in her own handwriting with some notes from mother. This was one of my favorite cakes when I was growing up. Berta made it and gave it to us every year at Christmas.

It is basically a fruitcake. A note at the bottom of the recipe says "add a package of mix (sic) fruits if you want to. I all ways (sic) do"
