3 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups sifted flour
1/2 pound pure butter
1/2 bag coconut
2 egg yolks
1/2 gallon milk
2 teaspoons vanilla

Meringue:
9 egg whites
1/4 cup sugar
Cream of tartar

Melt butter in a double boiler. Add milk. In a separate bowl, combine flour, sugar, and egg yolks. Pour mixture into milk and butter. Simmer until thick. Add 2 teaspoons vanilla and coconut.

Meringue:
Whip egg whites. Add sugar and a pinch of cream of tartar. Place hot custard into a baked pie shell. Add meringue. Sprinkle coconut on top. Bake in a 350º oven until browned.
