3/4 cup shortening
1 to 1 1/4 cup brown sugar
3 eggs
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
3 tbsp cider vinegar
2 tsp lemon juice
Water
3 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp soda
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
3/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp all spice
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1 1/2 cups grated apples
3/4 cup chopped walnuts

Topping:
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Combine vinegar and lemon juice in glass measuring cup, and add water to make 3/4 cup. Set aside.

Sift flour, soda, salt and spices. Stir in alternately with apples and liquid. Stir in walnuts. Divide between 2 loaf pans. Combine topping ingredients and sprinkle over bread. Bake at 350º for 45 - 60 minutes until tests done. Makes 2 4”x8” loaves.
