1/2 cup applesauce
1/3 cup shortening
2 eggs
1/3 cup water
1 1/4 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups flour
1/3 cup cocoa
3/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1 cup (6 oz.) chocolate chips
1/3 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Combine applesauce, shortening, eggs, water and sugar; beat on low speed for 30 seconds. Combine the dry ingredients; add to applesauce mixture. Beat on low for 30 seconds, then on high for 2 1/2 minutes. Fold in chocolate chips and walnuts. Bake in a greased and floured 9 by 5 by 3 loaf pan or 3 mini-loaf pans. Bake the large loaf at 350 degrees for 60 to 70 minutes or until toothpick in center comes out clean. Cool in pan about 10 minutes; then cool on rack.

Mix together 1/2 cup powdered sugar, 1 to 2 Tbsp. milk, dash of salt, and 1/4 tsp. vanilla. Drizzle over loaf.
