1/4 c. softened butter
1/4 c. shortening (Crisco)
1/4 c. brown sugar
1 egg yolk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. sifted flour
1/4 tsp. salt

egg white and 3/4 c. chopped nuts, opt.

Directions:
Directions:
Mix thoroughly the butter, shortening, brown sugar, egg yolk and vanilla. Sift the flour and salt together and stir into the butter mixture.
Roll into 1 " balls. Dip in slightly beaten egg whites and roll in finely chopped nuts. (II don't do this.) Place about 1" apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 375º for 5 mins. Remove from oven and press thumb gently on top of each cookie. Return to oven and bake 8 minutes longer. Cool. Place in thumbprint a bit of chopped candied fruit, jelly, pecan, chocolate or tinted frosting. I use currant jelly.
