1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 egg, separated
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup all purpose flour
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup nuts, pecans or walnuts, finely chopped

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees

In bowl, cream butter with brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg yolk and vanilla; mix well.

In separate bowl, combine flour with salt; blend dry ingredients with creamed mixture. With lightly floured hands, roll dough into 1 inch balls. In small bowl, beat egg white lightly. Dip dough balls in egg white, then in nuts before placing two inches apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 5 minutes; remove from oven and gently make indentation in the center of each cookie with thumb. Return to oven and continue baking 8 to 10 minutes or until cookies are set.

Remove from oven and cool. Spoon jelly or candied fruit into each thumbprint. Store in tightly covered container.
