1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 oz. red food coloring
2 tbsp. cocoa
2 1/4 cup plain flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. soda
1 cup buttermilk
1 tbsp. vinegar

Frosting:
1/2 stick butter
11 oz. cream cheese
1 (16 oz.) box powdered sugar
2 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening sugar and eggs. Make a paste with food coloring and cocoa, add to creamed mixture. Add salt and flour with buttermilk and vanilla. Alternately add soda and vinegar; don't beat hard, just blend. Bake at 350' for 30 minutes in 2 8-inch pans that have been greased and floured, Layer may be split to make four.
Cream butter and cream cheese. Add sugar and vanilla; spread on cooled cake.
