1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
1-1/2 cups sugar
2-1/2 cups flour
2 tsp. cocoa powder
1 tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp. salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
2 - 1 oz. bottles red food coloring
1 tsp. baking soda

Frosting:
1 cup milk
1/4 cup flour
3/4 cup shortening
1-1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening, sugar and eggs until very smooth. Sift flour, cocoa and salt together and add to first mixture alternating with buttermilk, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla and food coloring. Beat again. Fold in baking soda and vinegar mixed together. Don not beat after this. Divide batter equalling into two 9" round layer pans and bake at 350º for 30 min.

Frosting:
Combine milk and flour. cook until thick stirring consistently. Set aside. While cooling, cream shortening & sugar until light and creamy. Add vanilla & flour mixture. Beat until stiff.
