3/4 cup chopped nuts
1 cup pitted dates, chopped
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
3 T. shortening
3/4 cup boiling water
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 cup sifted flour

Directions:
Directions:
Mix nuts, dates, and soda with a fork. Add shortening and boiling water; set stand 20 minutes. Beat eggs with fork and add vanilla, sugar, and flour, beating with fork. Add date mixture to just blended. Bake in loaf pan at 350º for one hour and 5 minutes or well done in a greased pan.
