3 pounds of fresh string beans
4 large potatoes pealed and cut in large pieces
2 ham hocks
1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce

There are two ways of making this dish.

On the top of the stove put the ham hocks in water and boil for about 30 minutes. Add the string beans and pealed potatoes and one tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce. Cover the pot and cook on lower heat for another half hour.

In a crock pot cook the ham hocks and water on high for two hours. Add the string beans and pealed potatoes and one tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce and continue cooking on low for about one and a half hours.

You can use any type of ham if you do not like ham hocks. Our mother sometimes made this meal with some bacon as they did in the Depression when ham was expensive. We always sprinkle vinegar over the food, but this is not necessary. Years ago people put the vinegar in a cruet on the table but since this is not a fancy meal, just put the vinegar bottle on the table.
