"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

Directions:
Cream margarine and sugar together, add eggs and mix well. Then add spices, flour, soda, baking powder, cocoa, jam and enough wine to make a soft dough. Add nuts and raisins. Shape into balls the size of small walnuts and place on an ungreased cookie sheet or parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven at 350º for 10-12 minutes. May be frosted with a powdered sugar lemon or vanilla icing when cool.

Dip cookies in icing and dry on racks.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
This is cousin Diane Melerski's favorite cookie. She says this recipe will feed a cast of thousands - like most Italian recipes. It makes about 250 cookies. Feel free to cut the recipe in half, you will still have plenty for yourself and some to give as gifts! This is a cookie that all of our aunts made with some variation at Christmas time and for weddings and other special occasions. For example, Aunt Cay McGowan's recipe calls for less cloves and some nutmeg and instead of wine, 1/2 cup coffee and 1/4 cup orange juice. She and Aunt Marion used grape jelly instead of the strawberry. So just go ahead and be creative!
