2 1/2 c. all-purpose or cake flour
2 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves (optional)
1/2 tsp. ground allspice
1 1/2 c. applesauce (or more to taste)
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 c. raisins
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Heat the oven to 350. Grease and flour an oblong pan. 13x9x2 inches, or 2 round layer pans, 8 or 9x1 1/2 inches. Beat all ingredients in large mixer bowl on low speed, scraping bowl constantly for 30 seconds. Beat on high speed, scraping the bowl occasionally for 3 minutes. Pour into pan, or pans.
Bake it until the wooden pick that you insert in center comes out clean.

Oblong: 60-65 minutes
Round layers: 50-55 minutes

Then let it cool. Frost with your favorite frosting. Nealle recommends cream cheese frosting.
