1/2 cup butter
11/2 cups sugar
2 egg yolks
2 cups pastry flour
3 Tbsp. burnt sugar
1 cup water
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup flour
1/4 tsp. salt
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
2 egg whites

Cream butter and sugar. Add beaten egg yolks, water, and 2 cups flour. Beat vigorously. Add burnt sugar, vanilla and 1/2 cup flour sifted with baking powder and salt. Beat again and fold in beaten egg whites. Bake in moderate over for 25 to 30 minutes.
Put 1/2 cup sugar in an iron skillet, stir until it becomes liquid and throws up an intense heat. Then remove from fire, add 1/2 cup boiling water, then return to fire and allow to boil to a syrup-like consistency.
