½ c. shortening
1 ½ c. sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp. cocoa
2 oz. red food coloring
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. buttermilk
2 ½ c. sifted cake flour
1 ½ tsp. vinegar
1 tsp. baking soda

Directions:
Directions:
Cream the shortening and sugar until fluffy. Mix in the eggs. Make a paste of the cocoa, vanilla and food coloring and add to the shortening mixture. Mix the cake flour and salt together. Add the flour mixture and the buttermilk alternately. Mix the vinegar and soda together and fold into the cake batter (do not beat). Divide into two greased and floured 9” cake pans. Bake at 350º approximately 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into cake mixture comes out clean.

Frost with whipped cream frosting.
