1/4 lb. German sweet chocolate
2 C sugar
1/2 C boiling water
1 C shortening
1 t soda
4 eggs
1 C buttermilk
2 1/2 C flour
2 t vanilla

Filling
1 C sugar
1 C evaporated milk
3 egg yolks
1 C coconut
1/2 c chopped nuts
1 t vanilla
1/4 c butter

Directions:
Directions:
Dissolve chocolate in boiling water set aside to cool. Dissolve soda in half buttermilk. Cream sugar and shortening, add egg yolks & beat well. Add chocolate, flour, buttermilk alternately. Stir in vanilla, fold in egg whites stiffly beaten. Bake in 3 -9in pans 350º for 30 min


Filling
combine all ingredients in saucepan and boil until very thick, stirring constantly. Spread filling between layers before it is completely cool, then put on top too.
