l tsp. black pepper
1 tsp. mustard seed

In bottom of each quart jar put a pinch of alum, a large head of dill, and a small wedge of onion. Cut the cucumbers into slices or spears and add to the jar. Bring the brine to a rolling boil and pour over the cucumbers. Seal immediately..
