Bean soup –a favorite in many languages-has also fallen prey to my sense of adventure in cooking. This go-to dish is likely to be a part of every person’s memory bank. The basic recipe must be found elsewhere, but I must confess that I was almost able to erase it from the favorites.
It happened this way: One winter Mom and Dad (Ruby/Grandma Brue and Les/Grandpa Brue) were visiting Bob and me in California. It was a rare dreary day, not as cold as Iowa, but dreary nevertheless. We decided to have a pot of bean soup for dinner. Mom and I went to the kitchen. How shall we begin? Mom said, “Make it the way you usually do. How can it fail?” How indeed! Some way or another, after forty plus years of evolution, our recipe had come to include too much garlic and too much bay leaf…or perhaps it was that dash of cayenne that rendered it less than desirable! Both Mom and Dad were polite, but since that fiasco, neither has asked for my assistance in making bean soup.
