1: Have a spreader, spatula, and frosting bag on hand.
2: Pipe your icing or frosting in a circle around the inside edges of your cake layers. Think of them as walls to keep your filling safe. Place the layers in the freezer for 10 minutes.
3: Add your filling (s) and stack the layers.
4: Place a big glob of frosting on top of the cake. Use a spreader to get a somewhat even coat of frosting all over the cake. This is called a "crumb coat." Freeze for 10 minutes.
5: Now add your final layer of frosting for a clean, even look.
6: Decorate as you wish. Melted chocolate and berries have a dramatic effect.
