3 cups sifted flour
2 teaspoons soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 3/4 cups hot coffee or water
1/2 cup walnuts, shelled and broken
1 1/2 cups dates, chopped
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, baking powder, soda, and salt together. Cream shortening, sugar, beaten eggs and vanilla and beat thoroughly. Mix dates and nut meats with sifted dry ingredients and add alternately with liquid. Pour into loaf pan lined with waxed paper. Let stand 15 minutes. Bake in moderate oven.
