1 pkg yeast, 1 tbsp sugar, 1/4 c warm water

1/2 c sugar; ½ c butter; 1 tbsp salt; 2 ½ c milk scalded; 3 eggs beaten; 4-6 cups flour.

Directions:
Combine yeast, 1 tbsp sugar and ¼ c water in small bowl; stir and set aside to proof.

Combine butter, salt and sugar in large bowl. Pour in scalded milk and cool enough to touch. Mix thoroughly to combine.

Add 2 c flour, mixing till smooth. Add eggs and yeast mixture, mixing till incorporated. Mix in remaining flour to make a stiff dough. Knead till smooth.

Place in lightly greased bowl, turning to cover dough with oil. Allow to rise; punch down, then rise 1 more hour.

Punch down dough and separate into 3 equal portions. Smooth 2 into round loaves and put into greased round baking pans. Shape remaining dough into a cross pattern and place on loaves.

Let rise about 30 minutes; brush with egg wash and bake 350º about 30 minutes or till golden and bottom sounds hollow when tapped on.

I remember Grandma Tvardzik working this dough and lovingly assembling a cross on the top. She was magical with pastry. After it was baked, she would add the bread plus a sampling of her Easter meal to her "Easter Basket" and take it to the church to be blessed with holy water from the Priest.

I miss that amazing woman!
