Combine and cream well:
1 cup shortening
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1-1/2 cup sugar

Add 2 well beaten eggs and beat well. Sift 3-1/2 cups flour and 3/4 tsp. baking soda

Add flour mixture to shortening alternating with 5 tablespoon milk. Fold in 2 cups chopped dates and 3/4 cups walnuts. Drop on greased cookie sheet and press down. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 mins
