1 meaty ham bones or smoke ham hocks
3 cups of water
1 1/2 pounds beans, fresh
2 Tsp vegetable shortening(solid)
1 Tsp of sugar
1/2 pound okra,washed and thinly sliced
1 Tbs salt
2 tsp freshly ground black pepper

Put the ham bone and water in a large saucepan. Cover and heat to boiling . Reduce the heat to simmering and cook, covered, 45 minutess. Remove the ham bone from ithe saucepan. . Remove the meat from the bone finely shred it. and returned both meat and bone to the pan.

Wash the butter beans and add them to the saucepan. Heat to simmering, stir int the remaining ingredients, and simmer until the okra are tender, about 25 minutes. served bean hot.
