1 lb. butter, softened
8 eggs, beaten
1/2 milk
1 tsp. hartshorn (can only get at Sullivan's)
1 tsp. anise oil
4 cups sugar
10 cups flour

2 TB shortening
1 box powdered sugar

Cream sugar and butter together. Add eggs and mix. Scald milk and add hartshorn to milk. Put in large pan. It will foam. Add milk mixture to sugar and eggs. Add anise oil and flour and mix until dough comes away from bowl. Refrigerate overnight or for a couple of days covered. Roll out and cut by cookie cutters. Bake at 350 until they look light golden brown. Don't grease pan. Prepare icing and ice cookies. You can also sprinkle colored sugar on top.
