1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. butter, softened
1 1/4 c. packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
3/4 c. ground hazelnuts (filberts) or pecans, toasted

Toast the nuts. Place on a baking sheet in single layer. Bake at 350º for 5 - 10 minutes, stirring once or twice.
Beat shortening and butter on med.-high for 30 sec. Add brown sugar, baking soda, and salt. Beat til combined. Beat in egg and vanilla. Beat as much flour in as you can with mixer. Stir in the rest. Stir in nuts. Divide dough in half. Shape into 10" long logs. Wrap dough in plastic wrap or waxed paper. Chill 4 - 48 hrs. Cut rolls into 1/4" slices. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 375º for 7 - 8 minutes til edges are firm and slightly golden. Cool on wire rack.
