1 bag of split peas
1 c. carrots
16 c. water
some ham, cut up
1 onion, chopped
1 tsp. salt
2 c. diced celery
1/2 tsp. pepper
1 c. potatoes, diced

Bring to a boil and simmer 3 hours.

If you have a ham bone, you can use that. The day before, simmer the ham bone for at least 6 hours in enough water to cover it. You may need to add more water as it cooks down. Strain out the bone and the little pieces that fall off. Then chill over night, and skim the fat off the next day and use that broth for the water.
