4 large Granny Smith Apples
4 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons Amaretto liqueur -or- caramel syrup*
Whipped cream -or- vanilla ice cream
Toasted slivered almonds (optional)



Caramel Sauce:

1 cup water
½ cup sugar
½ cup light corn syrup
salt
¾ cup heavy cream



*The kind for coffee flavoring.

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375º F. Peel and core apples, slice each apple horizontally into 5-6 slices., then reassemble into a stack. Place apples into a 13x9 baking dish. Melt butter and whisk in Amaretta or caramel syrup. Drizzled over apples. Bake uncovered for about 60 minutes or until tender to the fork. Baste every 15 minutes with the butter drippings in the dish. Prepare the sauce by stirring together sugar, water, corn syrup and a pinch of salt in a heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil without stirring, until the mixture turns a caramel color. Remove from heat and slowly stir in cream. Let cool. To assemble, placed glazed apples in dessert dishes. Pour the warm syrup down the center of each apple. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream. Sprinkle with toasted almonds. Serve immediately.
