1/2 c butter
2 c brown sugar
1 3/4 cup karo corn syrup
2 c heavy whipping cream - divided
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
In a heavy pan, melt butter, then stir in the brown sugar - until dissolved. Add the corn syrup, 1 cup whipping cream and the vanilla. Cook until it boils vigorously, then add the other cup of cream - slowly. Cook slowly to a hard ball stage on a candy thermometer. Pour into a buttered 9 x 9 pan. Chill, then cut into 1 inch pieces.Pieces may be individually wrapped in waxed paper squares for gift giving.
When it comes to Christmas candy, THIS is the recipe to have! Everyone loves these caramels - whether they turn out perfect, or when they turn out hard - like toffee, or when they turn out so soft we get to eat them with a spoon!!

GRANDMA ORNDORFFalso had this recipe. She wrote "VERY GOOD !!" on this recipe and that she sprinkles the pan with chopped nuts before she pours the caramels in.
