1 pound dates
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
3 cups flour
1 1/2 cups rolled oats
1 tsp. cream of tarter
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda dissolved in 1 tbsp. water.

Directions:
Directions:
Put dates, sugar and water into a saucepan. Cook until thick. Cool. Nuts may be added (I never do).

Cream shortening and brown sugar well. Add eggs.

Spread half of batter in a well greased and floured jelly roll pan. Spread on date filling, spread rest of butter on top. Bake 1/2 hour at 350 degrees. Place pan of water underneath in oven.
