2 butternut squash (about 5 lbs.)
8 sweet potatoes (about 4 lbs.)
1 tsp. salt
1/2 cup pure maple syrup
4 T. (1/2 stick) butter, at room temp.
2 tsp. nutmeg
1 1/2 T. finely grated orange zest
Salt and pepper to taste

Halve the squash, lengthwise, and discard seeds. Peel and cut into cubes. Peel sweet potatoes and cut into cubes. Place squash and sweet potatoes in large pot, covered with water. Add salt and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered until vegetables are tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain well and transfer to large bowl. While the vegetables are hot, add remaining ingredients and mash with a potato masher (mixture will not be ultra-smooth). Keep warm until serving in an oven-to-table dish covered with foil. If necessary, place in a 350 oven until warmed through, about 15 minutes.
