1 chicken, cut into parts
chicken broth to cover the chicken parts

2 cups flour
3 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp butter
1 egg
3/4 cup milk

Salt and pepper the chicken.
Put chicken in a heavy Dutch oven, cover with broth, and cook until meat is done.
Make dumplings: sift four with baking powder and salt, mix in butter.
Beat egg and milk
Stir into dry ingredients, batter should be quite stiff
Drop by spoonfuls on top of chicken parts, cover with top and don't peek for 20 mins.
(its important that the dumplings cook by steam, and not touch the broth so they don't get heavy, but more biscuit-like)
