My "Pappy" Carothers was a very jolly person. He would get down on his hands and knees to play with his grandchildren. He liked to play jokes on people. Ma Carothers would wear her dresses till they were threadbare and patch on top of patch-although she had plenty of clothes. Pappy would find a small torn place and rip it on down and say "Mollie, you're about to tear your dress!" and just laugh.
Pappy was also a farmer and grew cotton. I remember picking cotton on his farm. Once he let my cousin, Willie Jo, and me go with him on a cotton load to the "gin". It was a great experience to ride on top of the cotton. He then bought each of us girls some material for a dress-about 2 1/2 yards at 10cents a yard. Jo's was blue and mine was brown print. Mother made them alike.
